SPENDING Money on Popcorn Day!

An interesting thing happened last week.  My children came home from school announcing that there would be a popcorn day on Thursday.  For $1 they could purchase a bag of popcorn during their snack break.  Immediately Caleb checked his SPENDING piggy bank and announced that he was going to take $1 to school to purchase some.  Maya on the other hand realized that we could make popcorn and she could bring some to school and use the money in her SPENDING piggy bank for something else.  I’m not sure why, but lately Caleb has been buying a lot of food and things to eat with his SPENDING money.  It’s not that we don’t have a fully stocked kitchen…maybe he’s going through another growth spurt!  Maybe he just likes to buy himself a treat that he doesn’t always get at home.

My daughter Maya, tends to think ahead and doesn’t usually use her SPENDING money to purchase food or things that she already has access to at home.  I remember last summer when I was walking home with my children after school and we saw the icecream truck.  Caleb wanted to bring some of his SPENDING money with him to school the next day to buy an icecream from the truck.  Maya didn’t understand this and asked him why he would buy the icecream (which were about $3 each) when he could just have one at home.  She reminded him that we were going to Canada’s Wonderland that weekend and he might want to save his SPENDING money for the trip.  After giving it some thought, Caleb decided to use his SPENDING money at Canada’s Wonderland instead of on the icecream.  Can you guess what he bought with his SPENIDNG money at Wonderland? - Candyfloss!
